Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, honors the rich culture, significant contributions, and remarkable achievements of African Americans in the United States. Its inception traces back to 1926, when Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian, established "Negro History Week" to raise awareness about Black history and the pivotal role of Black historical figures in American history. This week-long observance was extended to the entire month of February in the 1970s, aiming for increased recognition and appreciation of Black history throughout the year.

Throughout February, The Container Store, led by our Mosaic Employee Resource Group, will host a series of events and activities celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of African Americans in our country.

Inside Our Company

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, our Mosaic Employee Resource Group will present "Canvas of Change: A Symphony of Black Voices in Creativity and Collaboration," a discussion highlighting the importance of visibility, amplification of voices, and investment in the future of African Americans, particularly in underrepresented spaces. Esteemed panelists include Rachel Hornbuckle (Staff Attorney, The Container Store), Ashley Hines (Director of DE&I, Advocate Aurora Health), Marilyn Lavergne (Interior Designer & Board Member of The Kaleidoscope Project), and Tiffany Blassingame (Owner, Simple Organization). The event will stream live and be recorded so our teams across the country can watch, learn, and engage.

In Our Community

As part of our commitment to promoting brain and heart health, we are supporting the American Heart Association's efforts to enhance outcomes for heart disease and stroke within the Black community by encouraging Hands-Only CPR training of at least one person in every household. Statistics reveal that Black and Hispanic adults experiencing cardiac arrest outside a hospital are less likely to receive bystander assistance. The American Heart Association seeks to address this disparity by empowering the community to learn Hands-Only CPR.

We invite you to join us in promoting healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and strokes, right here in our community. You can do so by making a donation, joining one of our Heart Walk Teams, or educating yourself and your loved ones about preventive measures to improve outcomes.

In Our Stores

There will be signage and information throughout our stores, allowing customers to learn how we are celebrating Black History Month this year and how they can support our Life is Whyâ„¢ Campaign. Customers will also have the opportunity to support the giving campaign by making donations at the register during checkout.

Join us in celebrating Black History Month and honoring the culture, contributions, and legacy of African Americans in our country!
